Interview: Jake Shears and Babydaddy of Scissor Sisters
The bold and flamboyant Scissor Sisters have never shied from wearing their influences on their collective sleeve, and with just two albums in their discography, the band has rallied a fervent and massive fan base. Their trademark blend of 70s glam, 80s pop and nouveau chic cuts across gender, genre and orientation, and no matter what your typical musical leanings may be, it’s hard to resist shaking your ass when you hear them.
Harmonium: Why the long delay between the debut and Ta-dah?
Shears: We toured on the debut for about 2 years so, it took us 9 months from the beginning to the end of recording. Some say that’s a long time, but I think it’s just right.
Babydaddy: Well I have to say that I’ve heard everything from “why did we have to wait so long?” to “how did you get the album out so fast?” I mean, two years is pretty common, I guess it’s just that the anticipation that makes it seem so long. We spent a long time working the first album, and after about a year and a half on tour, we had about three weeks off before we started writing and recording again. So really it’s just the perfect time for us.
Harmonium: In your mind, is there anything different about the new record?
Shears: It’s a totally different album. It’s got a different feel. A lot of people are going to want Scissor Sisters Part 2 and this is not it.
Babydaddy: The process was very similar, and the inspiration was really influenced by being on the road and playing these live shows as a “proper” rock and roll band. With this album we feel a lot more collaborative and more in sync.
Harmonium: It seems that both albums are definitely dance-oriented, but that this one seems to have more of a “rock” feel to it.
Babydaddy: I think we made both albums with dance music in mind because that’s what we spent a lot of time listening to and focusing on. But this one may sound more organic because we were looking more toward the past, to sounds from before there were drum machines.
Harmonium: Do you feel like you’ve received a better reception overseas than here in the States?
Babydaddy: There’s no doubt that we have been received better in the UK just from sheer sales, but we do have a great following in the US. We spent less time in the UK on this album and have done very well, but we’re trying to concentrate on places we weren’t able to visit before. You have to show your face here to build a name, and we’re still getting our names and faces out there. Like where I was reading 5 star reviews of the first record, I was like, “come on, give us 4 stars; we need room to grow.”
Shears: We’ve had a better reception overseas but that comes hand in hand with radio play. There was no radio play in the US.
Harmonium: Do you think this album is more or less “radio friendly” the last?
Babydaddy: We didn’t really consider radio when creating the album, but we often do think of the songs in terms of pop records, with verses and choruses and especially with respect to the length of the songs. Most are 4 minutes or less for that reason. And yeah, I’d say the new album is definitely more radio friendly, but that wasn’t really by design.
Harmonium: What was it like working with a legend like Elton John on the new record?
Babydaddy: It was amazing, of course. We’ve become good friends over the past few years so it’s was more of a natural thing than it may seem. We were just hanging out in front of a piano instead of over a dinner table.
Harmonium: Is there ever any plan to release recordings of the early, pre-Anna material (some of which appeared in video form on the DVD), or is that just an early chapter of the Scissor Sisters that you’d rather remain closed?
Shears: We’re hoping someday we’ll have a great B-side release of it.
Babydaddy: We’re not hiding from the early material, and it would be good for a career retrospective down the road if such a thing were warranted. I’m actually very proud of that early, edgier stuff, but really the people who want to hear it have probably done so, whether through the DVD or by trading bootlegs or mp3s online.
Harmonium: Speaking of, how do you feel about the rise of digital distribution as a way of getting music?
Babydaddy: (Long pause) Well…it’s a tricky question. People deserve a good product and they will buy it if it’s there. Obviously I want people to hear our music but I also work as an artist and want to be paid for what I create as an artist. iTunes is easier than some of the more illegal filesharing networks, and until the sales venues were available, I don’t blame people for using things like Limewire to get music. I mean, if there was a TV on the street and one in a store, I’d take the TV on the street of course, but now that the model is in place and it works, people should use it.
Harmonium: Your recordings speak for themselves, but the real Scissor Sisters energy seems to come through in a live setting. Do you have a preference between studio work and playing live?
Shears: I do love being in the studio but live is where the most fun is!
Babydaddy: The studio is where I would rather be. I love being on stage and I’ve gotten used to it, but in the beginning it was Jake dragging me on stage and me wanting to hide out and tinker in the studio. We all love being in the studio, we just need a break from time to time.
Harmonium: In many areas of pop culture, image is everything, and each member of the Scissor Sisters definitely has a distinct style. Do you feel like you are in control of how you present yourselves, and where do you get your incredible clothes?
Babydaddy: Oh we are most definitely in control. We’ve been really fortunate to work with the designer Zaldy, who did our most recent wardrobe. He’s an amazing friend and designer. He had individual meetings with each of us, and we’d go into our closets and show him what we like and dislike, and then we’d go from there. Zaldy picks up on the things we all love collectively. We all have senses of unique style, but we all love to sparkle a little bit.
Harmonium: What are listening to when you aren’t playing your own material?
Shears: Right now? TV on the Radio, Joan as Police Woman, Reissue of Arthur Russell Instrumentals, The Knife.
Babydaddy: Just listening to The Knife record that Jake introduced me to, some Nine Inch Nails, and generally a lot of darker stuff than what we do. I also love that record by The Feeling…it’s so pop, so sugary, and it just gets into your head.
Harmonium: Finally, and this is a tough one…who gets all the attention from the boys?
Babydaddy: You know, I have to say we’re all evenly split for attention. We all have our little factions that are rallying for their favorite, and it makes me really happy. Jake gets a lot of attention just by virtue of being the lead singer, but when the boys want a little beef, they come to me.

Only you (and the scissor sisters) could manage to go from the recording of the 2nd album being a more “organic/ rock & roll” process to the importance of fashion designers named “Zaldy” to the knife & tv on the radio to who the boys go to for “beef”.
Lastly, if anything proves that TV On The Radio is (justly) loved by all, this is it!

It might be strange that at age 59 I find myself listening to the Sissor Sisters. But as with them, my musical tastes are all over the place. As mentioned, this review touches on many aspects of thier interestests, which I think is what makes thier music and style unique…....plus it’s killer pop and dance sometime too. Good interview that covers their diversity and where it comes from.

I think the second album is great, I have been listening to it a few times now and I grow to it more and more, my favourite songs are “I can’t decide” and “Everybody wants the same thing”.
And yes, nice interview… but I have to say, the attention doesn’t only come from boys… I know a lot of women who mourn the fact that Jake is gay
and would love to get their hands on him… yes, I am one of them!
