Artist Picks for 2006: John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats)

Not only is Mountain Goats frontman/mastermind John Darnielle one of the most prolific and well-spoken men in indie rock, but he’s just as much a music geek as any of the writers on Harmonium’s staff. From cutting edge hip-hop to dramatic piano folk, Darnielle’s tastes are very similar to our own, and as he explains below, he has managed to uncover some of the less-celebrated gems of 2006 in his pursuit of quality music.
1. Christine Fellows – Paper Anniversary
2. Om – Conference of the Birds
3. Regina Spektor – Begin to Hope
4. DJ Drama and Li’l Wayne – Dedication 2: Gangsta Grillz
5. Regurgitate – Sickening Bliss
6. Amon Amarth – With Oden On Our Side
7. Metallic Falcons – Desert Doughnuts
8. Ghostface Killah – Fishscale
9. Keith Jarrett – The Carnegie Hall Concert
10. Barbara Morgenstern – The Grass Is Always Greener
NOTES:
1. There were several points this year when this was the only album I could stand to listen to because everything else sounded so A) needlessly affected and B) amateur-hour by comparison. None of the singer-songwriters getting jizzed on by critics, present company occasionally included, are fit to stand in the blinding glare of Christine’s talent.
3. Well, yes, the album does seem to run out of steam at some point, but the high points – you already know what they are, right? – are, like, drunken-priest-kung-fu kill-all-the-invaders-and-boil-their-bodies incredible.
4. Li’l Wayne’s rising status among critics ‘n’ bloggers is resulting in plenty of nasty Internet sniping lately, eh? Plus ca change, right – music blogs really are the new ‘zines. The new Maximum Rock and Roll letters page, to be precise.
5. You didn’t hear it. It fucking ruled.
6. See #5.
9. ECM put out several really outstanding records this year, but I get listmaker anxiety about putting two or more titles from the same label on a year-end list. I think I probably played the Anouar Brahem Trio & Ralph Towner albums more, but the Jarrett one is just plain dazzling.
10. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, that’s better. Thanks.

The reason that most people (men) pursue these avenues is really related to their desire to be better and for striving for improvement to make themselves better. Zenerx

You would think that they world have OK’d it at the beginning instead of allowing it to go so long without saying a thing and then bringing it back up when it was too late. I don’t understand it at all. Extenze Side Effects
