Interview: Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal
With the release of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and the start of a supporting tour featuring, among other things, a three-headed tiger bull, Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes is a busy man. But he found some time before the band’s Jan. 19 tour-opening performance in Memphis to talk with Harmonium about the tour, the chemicals in his brain and his favorite cereal.
Harmonium: I know you’ve mentioned you’re going to have a spectacular and elaborate stage show resulting from the commercial use of “Wraith” and “Everyday Feels Like Sunday.” What can concert-goers expect from the tour? I read something about a giant animal and a 10-foot dress…
Barnes: Yeah. We don’t want to give too much away. But the thing that’s kind of crappy is that some of the stages, depending on how large the stage is, dictate what we can pull off. And because we have five musicians and a couple of keyboard stations and a drum set…we kind of take up a lot of space as it is, but then all of the sort of theatrical stuff is going to take up a lot of space also. We’re going to try to make stuff from night to night also, but what we have as our big show is going to be pretty spectacular.
Harmonium: How long have you rehearsed for it?
Barnes: We’ve been rehearsing about a month and a half.
Harmonium: How do you feel about it? Is it pretty tight, are you comfortable with it, are you still a little nervous?
Barnes: Yeah, still a little nervous. I mean, tonight is the first night of the tour. We did one run-through in Athens at the 40-Watt on a day that they were closed. That was pretty beneficial because then we got to check out everything that needed some adjustments. But I think it’s gonna probably take about a week for us to really get into the groove of things.
Harmonium: I’ve noticed in the past couple years that Of Montreal doesn’t really change or vary its setlist very much during a tour. How do you keep each performance fresh, and how do you plan to do that on this tour?
Barnes: This tour is actually the first one that we’ve put together numerous setlists. So, we have about 35 to 40 songs, and we’re going to mix it up. It’s still going to be pretty heavy on Hissing Fauna … and Sunlandic Twins and Satanic Panic, but there’s definitely going to be a lot more variety this time and actually, creating different…moments from night to night as well. So it’s not going to be the exact same show every single night, it’s going to be pretty different. You know, we’re playing … a lot of like bigger cities, we’re playing multiple shows, so we felt like it would be pretty cheap to do the same thing every night.
Harmonium: Cool. You said 35 to 40 songs — are you going to be delving back into the catalogue or doing some more covers?
Barnes: Yeah we have a couple covers ready to go. All, well, basically all contemporary covers that we’re doing: Love is All and Firey Furnaces and we are going to do a David Bowie cover.
Harmonium: Another question: Do you shave with an electric razor or nonelectric?
Barnes: Electric.
Harmonium: You commented once that Of Montreal was in the … indie ghetto, I think are the words you used. Do you feel that the band’s out of the indie ghetto now?
Barnes: Oh yeah, definitely.
Harmonium: What are some of the benchmarks of it getting out?
Barnes: Well, I guess the thing that we noticed…it’s kind of funny when I think about it now. Like, when we were first starting out we were definitely in the shadow of bands like Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control and Apples in Stereo and stuff, and we’d see the clubs that they were playing and we’d be really envious. Like “Aw man, if we could play those clubs,” then we’d know that we had we reached a certain point that we could feel pretty good about. And so that’s kind of like the barometer for touring then. You know, you just kind of judge it by what kind of venues you’re playing. And so when we realized that we could play Irving Plaza or Bowery Ballroom or Great American Music Hall in San Francisco or places like that, that’s kind of like when we realized like, “Oh this is great.” You know, like we’re kind of at the point that Neutral Milk Hotel was at, you know, when we were first starting out.
Harmonium: Looking at some of the lyrics from Hissing Fauna, it would seem that, to me at least, that some of the lyrics came before the music. Is that true?
Barnes: Yeah, definitely. “The Past is a Grotesque Animal” I had all those lyrics written up, and it was something I kind of had to add it together because over like half my journal was filled with those lyrics.
Harmonium: Now is that usually how you go about writing songs? Or do you sometimes come up with the music beforehand, or is it just however, just go with it?
Barnes: Yeah, usually there’s no real formula. You know, it changes from song to song. So sometimes I’ll have the lyrics first, and sometimes I’ll have the music first, and sometimes I don’t even have anything I’ll just go into the studio and just start fooling around.
Harmonium: What’s a good example of that? Is there something off the new album that you could say for example?
Barnes: Yeah, well “We Were Born As Mutants Again” … I was working on “She’s a Rejecter,” and as the song… I was working on the ending of it — I just decided to just extend that sort of high-frequency drum and just extended that for a while and sort of added another drum track on top of that and added a bass line on top of that and then added the verse and the song just sort of evolved in this organic way.
Harmonium: So what do you usually have for breakfast? Or do you eat breakfast?
Barnes: Usually my breakfast is lunch because I stay up pretty late. But I like, I’m a big cereal fan.
Harmonium: What’s your favorite kind of cereal?
Barnes: I kind of go back and forth. I like all sorts of kinds. I used to be a huge sugary cereal fan when I was a kid, and I had a mouthful of cavities to show for it — or a mouthful of fillings, rather. So, I decided to go a slightly more healthy route, so I usually eat something like Crispix or Corn Flakes or something like that.
Harmonium: Was writing and recording the material that’s on Hissing Fauna cathartic for you?
Barnes: Yeah, definitely. When I was making this record, I wasn’t actually thinking that I was making a record. I was just sort of approaching creating music as a form of therapy because I was going through this serious chemical depression and anxiety — like serious anxiety and paranoia problems — and the music was there to sort of help me get through it. And so that’s why I think the first half of the record sounds like, to me it sounds like Sunlandic Twins, musically…the reason why is when I was writing it, Sunlandic Twins hadn’t even come out yet. So I was still kind of in that style, or in that zone of writing and recording, but I had very limited resources because I was living in Norway, and I just had my laptop and a MIDI keyboard and this like crappy little microphone and I just, you know, sort of get into that world that I did when I was in high school and stuff — just get the headphones on and close myself off in this little room and sort of lose myself. It’s kind of like meditation in a way.
Harmonium: Right. How does, or how will performing those songs affect you. I mean, recording them might be a release for you, but how does performing it in front of a bunch of people — does that change it at all for you? Is it different, or do you separate yourself from it?
Barnes: I’m separated from it to some degree, but it’s also, in a way because I’m sharing it with the rest of the musicians and with the audience, it kind of changes the dynamic a little bit. You know, at one point when I first started writing it and recording it, it’s more of like an insular, personal experience. But then when you involve other people and other people are playing the guitar parts and the drums and all that, it sort of creates a more positive energy. And I think, in a way, it sort of help lifts the spirits even more than when you’re just by yourself. Because it’s not really escapism anymore, now it’s communal connection with other humans.
Harmonium: Can you talk a little about the dynamic of the band performing? Because, I mean, you recorded most of your songs by yourself, right?
Barnes: Yeah.
Harmonium: So how does that affect the dynamic whenever you’re playing live with the band?
Barnes: Well now we sort of have it down where people understand what’s expected of them as far as, like, what role they play in the band, and I think that makes it a little bit easier so there’s not as much, I mean, not that there ever was too much tension or hostility. But I think that we’ve all sort of gotten comfortable with the situation as it is. That’s not to say that is going to be that way forever, you know. I never really know. I try not to think about it too much. Like, maybe when we make the next record, you know, maybe it will be more of a collaborative project, or maybe it will just be me in the bedroom again, or maybe it will be a combination of both. But, I think with this record, because it was such a personal record and because, also, the band was sort of splintered apart — everyone was living in different areas — it would have been very difficult for us to sort of get together and make a band record. I think that they are all sort of appreciative of what I went through and kind of respect the fact that it was a very personal record.
Harmonium: Your music has evolved a lot since Cherry Peel. What do you think of your earlier work in retrospect?
Barnes: It’s hard for me, like I don’t really listen to anything. So for me, the creation of music is the real joy, and then going back and listening to the old records doesn’t really offer me that much because I’m all about the new thing. I get really bored really quick, and nothing really satisfies me very much, so I never really feel like, “Oh that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” or whatever, you know? Everything just seems boring.
Harmonium: What do you think your feelings might be of Hissing Fauna or Sunlandic Twins in ten years?
Barnes: I’ll probably definitely have fond memories just because we’ve had so many good experiences performing the songs live.
Harmonium: Songs I noticed such as … “Heimdalsgate,” seem to show the some of the negative side of chemical use, legal or otherwise. Do you worry at all that fans might misconstrue that to be an encouragement?
Barnes: Well actually, Pitchfork got that wrong when they were reviewing that song. It has nothing to do with illegal drugs. It’s a song about the chemicals in your brain, just like the natural chemicals and trying to balance them out and that sort of feeling that you’re not really in control of your emotions or of your outlook on things. A lot of times it can be totally warped by this imbalance…it’s almost like you’re being betrayed by your body or your mind. It’s kind of a song about, if you kind of step outside of yourself saying to the physical part of your body, like, “get it together man, you’re ruining your life” or “you’re ruining my life.” Or our life, whatever.
Harmonium: Does Georgie Fruit have any plans of retiring, or is he going to become a stronger, more viable presence in the band?
Barnes: He’s definitely going to become stronger, at least on the short term. I don’t imagine that he’s going to exist for much more than, like, another year or two, though.
Harmonium: You started out recording on analog in your bedroom. What are your feelings on the rapid development of both digital recording and different digital ways to distribute your music such as iTunes or Myspace?
Barnes: I think it’s great. I think it’s amazing what you can do now with a limited budget. … That’s the great thing, too, is you see that people are becoming more and more accustomed to what you might consider lo-fi recording. So eventually there will be no reason whatsoever for major labels to exist, and, you know, everyone will basically be able to support themselves by making records in their home and just selling it through iTunes or whatever online vendor. And you wouldn’t really have to worry about the sort of bullshit side of the industry.
Harmonium: How much of the bullshit side of the industry have you had to deal with?
Barnes: Very little because I’ve always been on indie labels that have their hearts in the right place. I feel very fortunate to have worked with the people I have, especially now with Polyvinyl. I have such a special relationship with those guys because they…all believe in what we’re doing so much and respect it so much. It’s going to be very encouraging to know that there’s nobody involved that’s going to be like, “oh you shouldn’t do that” or “you shouldn’t say that” or “that song’s too weird,” or whatever. It’s all about just creating something special and interesting for the world.
